AceShowbiz - Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay became the latest target of a "swatting" incident. A prankster made a bogus 911 call, reporting gunshots at his mansion in Bel Air.
On Tuesday, law enforcement officials responded to a call about a gunman opening fire at Ramsay's home. The LAPD swung into action around 8:40 p.m., only to find that nothing was amiss. Ramsay, 58, and his family were not home at the time.
Neighbors and responding officers confirmed the report was false, and authorities suspect the incident to be a "swatting" prank.
"Swatting" involves making a fake call to emergency services to dispatch armed police officers to a specific address. According to TMZ, instances like these have become alarmingly frequent in Los Angeles, especially among high-profile celebrities.
Ramsay is far from the only celebrity to fall victim to such a prank. Just two weeks ago, rapper Nicki Minaj's Hidden Hills home was also targeted by a fake report of an assault with a deadly weapon. Past victims of "swatting" include Jennifer Aniston, Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
While Ramsay's case ended without a hitch, other "swatting" incidents have had more tragic outcomes. In 2017, an innocent Kansas man was fatally shot by responding officers, and in 2020 a Tennessee man died of a heart attack when police surrounded his home. Just recently rapper Young Scooter died following a swatting incident as well. These prank calls not only waste police resources but also pose life-threatening risks to the victims.
The swatting phenomenon gained infamy in the mid-2010s and continues to be a significant problem in Southern California. Influencer and comedian Kelsey Darragh recounted on her "Confidently Insecure" podcast how she was swatted last year, finding herself cuffed and her home raided by 30 officers in the middle of the night. "It's upsetting and it's so just intrusive and scary," she said.
Law enforcement has launched an investigation into the swatting of Gordon Ramsay's home, but no arrests have been made. The LAPD and Ramsay's representatives have yet to provide further comments on the incident.
