AceShowbiz - Hailey Bieber recently took to Instagram to share a personal health update: she has two ovarian cysts. "Currently have 2 ovarian cysts😩," Hailey wrote, encouraging others who deal with the same issue by saying, "If you deal with ovarian cysts I'm right there with ya!❤️🩹"
Ovarian cysts are relatively common, with the Mayo Clinic noting that "many women have ovarian cysts at some time." While most cysts present little to no discomfort and are harmless, larger or ruptured cysts can lead to serious symptoms like severe pelvic pain and abdominal bloating.
There are two main types of ovarian cysts: simple and complex. Simple cysts are filled with fluid and commonly resolve without treatment. Complex cysts, which contain blood or cells, are rarer and carry an increased risk of cancer.
These cysts vary in size, and giant cysts, measuring more than 10cm in diameter, can occur. Most ovarian cysts develop as part of the normal menstrual cycle when a follicle that fails to release an egg persists and continues to grow.
Various factors can increase the likelihood of developing ovarian cysts, including fertility treatments, getting the tubes tied, hypothyroidism, pregnancy, smoking, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Interestingly, taking oral contraceptives that prevent ovulation may reduce the chances of forming ovarian cysts.
Detecting and treating ovarian cysts depends on their size and the symptoms they cause. Many cysts resolve on their own within a few menstrual cycles. However, problematic cysts may require surgical removal, especially if they lead to conditions like ovarian torsion, where a cyst causes the ovary to twist, cutting off blood supply.
