AceShowbiz - Pop-rock sensation Benson Boone got cheeky at Coachella's second weekend by bringing a surprise guest onstage - a cardboard cutout of legendary Queen guitarist Brian May. In a playful nod to the lackluster crowd response to May's appearance the previous week, Boone cleverly staged the cardboard double during his rendition of "Bohemian Rhapsody."
Dressed in a fur cape to pay tribute to Queen's iconic frontman Freddie Mercury, Boone began the song at a turquoise piano before executing his signature flip. As the performance intensified, he turned to watch the cardboard cutout of May make its theatrical rise after the song's second verse.
While the crowd erupted in a mixture of confusion and delight, real guitarist Sus Vasquez played the guitar solo, prompting Boone to enthusiastically shout, "Brian May!"
Throughout the performance, Boone interacted with the cutout comically, grabbing it during the song's bridge, walking it past his choir of backup singers, and even lifting it high in the air.
Unfortunately, the cardboard image tipped over several times, but Boone was undeterred, perfectly embodying the line, "any way the wind blows," from the Queen classic tune.
Addressing the crowd, Boone stated, "I would like to let you all know, on Brian's behalf, he would've loved to have been here, but he unfortunately had to fly out so, we came up with that idea and he sends his love," before closing his set with his own hit, "Beautiful Things."
On the festival's first weekend, May's appearance was met with unexpected lackluster reaction, despite his incredible legacy. Despite this, May reflected on the moment on Instagram with gratitude, "Well, I'm still processing that moment in Coachella - seems like the world is, too. Mr. Boone - you gave us all a gift. Bri."
In a follow-up post, May unwittingly explained his absence from Boone's latest stunt, noting he was on a NASA asteroid mission. "I'm here to take part in an encounter with an ASTEROID that has never been seen by human eyes," the guitarist shared his excitement about the scientific endeavor.
