AceShowbiz - Despite heaping praise on Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren is really not a big fan of James Bond franchise. Ahead of their new show "MobLand" where they will play husband and wife, Mirren offered her candid views on one of Brosnan's most famous movie franchises.
While describing former 007 agent, Brosnan and Daniel Craig, as "lovely gracious persons," the actress admitted she never liked the superspy and found the series deeply sexist due to its portrayal of women.
"The whole series of James Bond, it was not my thing. It really wasn't. I never liked James Bond. I never liked the way women were in James Bond. The whole concept of James Bond is drenched and born out of profound sexism," Mirren told The Standard in a recent interview.
Consequently, she opposed the idea of a female actor taking up the mantle as 007 and instead advocated for films that highlight historical women who played significant roles in espionage.
"Women have always been a major and incredibly important part of the Secret Service, they always have been. And very brave. If you hear about what women did in the French Resistance, they're amazingly, unbelievably courageous. So I would tell real stories about extraordinary women who've worked in that world," she elaborated.
Earlier this year, it was announced that Amazon MGM Studios would assume creative control of the James Bond IP after a $1 billion deal, causing speculation about the franchise's future direction. With the original producers out of the picture, the studio enlisted Amy Pascal ("Spider=Man") and David Heyman ("Harry Potter") to oversee the forthcoming installment. However, the question of who will don the iconic tuxedo next remains unanswered.
Words on the street are, Amazon is eager to expand the franchise with spin-offs and TV series exploring the side characters in the 007 universe.
