The latest report claims the 14-year-old died by asphyxiation while on vacation at the upscale Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. Local officials suspect that possible intoxication after consuming some food might have led to his untimely death.
Miller, his parents Brett and Jessica Gardner, and his older brother Hunter, were enjoying a trip together when several family members fell ill. Despite the family's swift actions, Miller tragically passed away in his sleep on March 21.
The Gardners revealed the loss of their youngest son on March 23rd through a statement shared on the Yankees' X account, expressing their deep grief and confusion.
"With heavy hearts, we are saddened to announce the passing of our youngest son, Miller," the couple wrote. "He was 14 years old and has left us far too soon after falling ill along with several other family members while on vacation."
"We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st," they added.
Costa Rica's Judicial Investigative Agency is actively investigating the incident. Juan Pablo Alvarado Garcia, an official from the agency, noted that a toxicology test and autopsy results are pending and might take two to three months to finalize. The U.S. State Department has also confirmed its engagement with local authorities to ensure a thorough investigation.
Miller's passing prompted an outpouring of support from the sports community, including heartfelt messages from the New York Yankees and his father's former minor league teammate and Mets manager, Carlos Mendoza.
"Our hearts are heavy, and the Yankees family is filled with grief after learning of the passing of Miller Gardner," stated the Yankees.
