AceShowbiz - Candiace Dillard Bassett, a former cast member of "The Real Housewives of Potomac" (RHOP), has been vocal in her support for fellow star Karen Huger after Huger was sentenced to jail. Dillard Bassett reached out to Huger before the embattled star was sent to jail.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE at the 11th Annual Better Brothers Los Angeles Truth Awards, Dillard Bassett shared her thoughts on Huger's ordeal. "I'm obviously devastated for her and her family," she revealed.
"We all know that drinking and driving is not right," she continued. "We all have the opportunity to make choices, and it's on all of us to make the right choices, whether that is calling an Uber, sleeping on a couch, walking, whatever it is."
Huger was sentenced to two years in prison with one year suspended, meaning she will be incarcerated for one year. She also faces five years of probation upon her release and will be unable to drive during that time.
"So Karen will obviously have time to think about what she has done, but I'm excited for her to serve her time and come out stronger, which I know that she will," Dillard Bassett added.
Another pal Gizelle Bryant, also from "RHOP", was concerned about Huger's family. "I have reached out to Ray [Huger's husband]. He's keeping the circle that's going to be contacting Karen very tight," Bryant said on SiriusXM's "Andy Cohen Live".
She added, "All the ladies have been very concerned about Ray. We did tell him, 'We wanna start sending you food on a weekly basis. We're gonna take turns.' He did say he's overwhelmed with food, no, thank you."
Despite the challenges, Dillard Bassett remains optimistic about Huger's resilience. "Karen is probably doing alright in prison... 'taking names and kicking a**' as well as inspiring others," she speculated.
The reality star encouraged people to be supportive rather than judgmental, noting that Huger has faced significant cruelty online.
Dillard Bassett's reflections on motherhood also provided a poignant perspective on the situation. Having recently welcomed her first child, Jett Maxwell Lee, with husband Chris Bassett, she shared how parenthood has influenced her approach to conflict.
"You're always thinking about if I were to pop off, if I were to get into it with this person or that person, and something happens to me, I'm leaving my child without a parent. So you do think about that," she explained.
"The Real Housewives of Potomac" season 10 is reportedly filming without Huger, signaling a temporary hiatus for the "Grand Dame." As Huger serves her time, she is backed by a strong support system, including her former castmates who are ready to help her rebuild and come back even stronger.
