AceShowbiz - Seventeen years after the original, Will Smith is dropping major hints about a potential sequel to his 2008 hit superhero film, "Hancock." In a candid moment on xQc's Twitch live stream, the Oscar-winning actor delighted fans with some exciting tidbits about the project.
"There's a really cool, really cool 'Hancock 2' idea," Smith teased during the stream. "We haven't even talked about it so I'm gonna give you one little piece - Zendaya is being approached for a role in 'Hancock 2.' "
The original "Hancock" movie, directed by Peter Berg and written by Vy Vincent Ngo along with "Breaking Bad" creator Vince Gilligan, introduced audiences to Smith's character, an amnesiac, alcoholic superhero.
After saving the lives of a PR executive and his wife, played by Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron respectively, Hancock tries to improve his public image and unravel his mysterious past. The film was a box office success, grossing over $600 million worldwide against a $150 million production budget.
This isn't the first time fans have been teased with the possibility of a sequel. Shortly after the film's release in 2009, director Berg hinted at a follow-up, telling MTV News that "everybody's going to come back for a sequel."
By 2012, Berg reiterated the intention in another interview, this time noting that logistics were the main hurdle. "We've been talking about the sequel between us, Will Smith, [producers] Michael Mann and Akiva Goldman and myself. We're all interested, but we literally just have trouble getting into the same room at the same time," he shared.
Charlize Theron was also open to reprise her role. "For a while we [talked about a sequel]. I think closer to when the movie came out, but not in recent years, no. We'll be superheroes with our walkers, you know. And I'll still go," she humorously told ComicBook in 2020.
In addition to the "Hancock" sequel, Smith has revisited other notable roles. He starred in "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" in 2024 and is set to join Michael B. Jordan in a sequel to the 2007 post-apocalyptic film "I Am Legend."
While Sony has yet to comment officially on the "Hancock 2" sequel plans, Smith's remarks have certainly reignited excitement among fans. With Zendaya Coleman potentially joining the cast, the sequel promises not only to revisit the intriguing world of Hancock but also to bring new dimensions to the story. Stay tuned for more updates.
