Ben Stiller is announced to portray a Simon Cowell-esque character in an upcoming hour-long dramedy series that promises to offer an insider's look at the music industry.

AceShowbiz - Ben Stiller is attached to lead a new music industry drama series titled "The Band," which is currently in development at HBO. The series will feature Stiller as Oscar, a pop impresario and talent mogul who must form a new act to salvage his career and possibly his soul after being embroiled in a scandal.

"The Band" is described as a dramedy, similar to other industry-centric HBO series like "The Other Two" and "The Idol." According to Deadline, the series is set to provide an inside look at the challenges and intricacies of launching a boy band, echoing the real-life phenomena created by industry moguls like Simon Cowell.

Besides playing the lead role, Stiller is among the executive producers for the project. The actor has a very busy schedule, recently serving as an executive producer and director on Apple TV+'s "Severance," and also starring in the Christmas comedy "Nutcrackers." His upcoming projects include "The Dink," "Happy Gilmore 2," and "Belly of the Beast."

If "The Band" moves forward, it will mark a rare TV series starring role for Stiller, who has primarily focused on directing and producing in recent years. While he has appeared in guest spots on shows like "Arrested Development" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm," his only previous lead role in a television series was "The Ben Stiller Show" in 1990.
