AceShowbiz - Karla Sofia Gascon issued a statement yet again as the fierce backlash against her showed no sign of slowing down. On February 4, Gascon took to Instagram to address the situation, sharing an emotional Spanish-language statement.
"For years, I have given myself body and soul to The Emilia Pérez Family," Gascón wrote. She expressed gratitude to her team, colleagues, and supporters who have stood by her through these turbulent times.
Gascon was slammed for her past disparaging comments about Muslim, George Floyd, Black Lives Matter, Covid-19 vaccine, diversity at the Oscars, and even her own costar Selena Gomez. Reflecting on this tumultuous period, she described herself as having been "lost in my transition, seeking approval in the eyes of others."
Insisting that she had "nothing to hide," Gascon claimed she has since "finally" realized who she really was and only sought "the freedom to exist without fear, to create art without barriers and to move forward with my new life."
However, she admitted that she's clueless on how to proceed as she sent this heartfelt plea, "I ask the Hollywood experts, the journalists who know me and who have followed my career, how do I move forward?"
Gascón was deemed a trailblazer for her historic Oscar nomination for Best Actress - marking the first time an openly transgender woman has been nominated in this category – though this moment was overshadowed by her mounting controversies.
Despite calls to step down, Gascón has no intention of renouncing her nomination. In a recent interview with CNN en Español, she stated, "I cannot step down from an Oscar nomination because I have not committed any crime, nor have I harmed anyone. I am neither racist nor anything that all these people have tried to make others believe I am."
