AceShowbiz - Allison Holker's newly released memoir, "This Far: My Story of Love, Loss, and Embracing the Light", sends shockwaves through the legacy of her late husband, Stephen "tWitch" Boss, exposing the hidden struggles that preceded his December 2022 suicide.
In the book, Holker, 36, reveals eye-opening details about Boss' extended battle with addiction and mental health issues. "What I didn't know until I surveyed our backyard security cameras was that Stephen's smoking had ratcheted up," Holker recounts in her book.
"He was smoking in the morning and at night. It's almost as if he used one strain of pot at the start of the day to become tWitch, then used another at night to come down from that persona."
This disturbing realization was accompanied by the discovery of a "cornucopia" of drugs, including mushrooms and various pills, hidden in shoeboxes after his passing.
The distressing trajectory continued with Holker noting that tWitch's hygiene deteriorated, linking his lack of self-care to classic signs of depression. "I would find myself pleading with him to take a shower," she recalled.
She said her late husband was also "sneaking out to smoke" while on set of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" but she suspected he started to spiral after losing his job on the daytime show when it was canceled in May 2022 following accusations of toxic work environment.
"At the time I thought he was too tired to properly care for himself. Now I know that neglecting self-care is another classic sign of depression," she penned.
Holker's account also touched on deeper issues, pointing out journal entries where tWitch alluded to being sexually abused by a male figure during his childhood. This complex interplay of trauma and addiction became increasingly clear, leading Holker to reflect on the extent of his concealed struggles following his death.
The memoir has stirred considerable controversy within Boss' family. His mother, Connie Boss Alexander, criticized Holker, "Our family is absolutely appalled by the misleading and hurtful claims made about my son, Stephen Boss."
She asserted that they would not stand by while his name and legacy were tarnished. Furthermore, a cousin criticized Holker for making Boss' family sign NDAs to attend his funeral services and restricting access to his children.
Despite the backlash, Holker stands by her decision to share these revelations. She clarified via Instagram, "My only intention in writing the book is to share my own story as well as part of my life with Stephen to help other people."
Holker emphasized that her narrative could help others identify red flags they might have otherwise missed and initiate discussions on mental health. She has also committed to donating the proceeds from her book to a mental health foundation.
