AceShowbiz - December brought a flurry of excitement when Chris Evans was rumored to join Robert Downey Jr. and the cast of the upcoming "Avengers: Doomsday". with Downey Jr. taking on the iconic villain Doctor Doom, Evans was expected to reprise his role as Captain America. The actor has now addressed these rumors for the first time in a recent interview.
Speaking to Esquire, Chris Evans was candid about the perpetual rumors surrounding his return to the MCU. "That's not true, though," Evans stated. "This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years - ever since [Avengers]: Endgame. I've just stopped responding to it." Evans reiterated his stance, saying, "Yeah, no - happily retired!"
Anthony Mackie, who leads "Captain America: Brave New World", also spoke to Esquire regarding the rumors. Mackie admitted he was unaware of any plans for Evans to rejoin the MCU. "I didn't know!" Mackie said with a laugh.
"I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn't on the table then. At least, he didn't tell me it was on the table, because I asked him. I was like, 'You know, they said they're bringing everyone back for the movie. Are you coming back?' "
Mackie recalled his pal's response, "He goes, 'Oh, you know, I'm happily retired.' " Despite Evans' denial, Mackie admitted he had not seen a script for "Avengers: Doomsday".
In contrast, Benedict Cumberbatch has confirmed his appearance in the much-anticipated film. The "Doctor Strange" star previously believed he was cut from "Avengers: Doomsday", but he clarified this in a statement to Business Insider, saying, "I got that wrong. I am in the next one." He humorously qualified, "Don't ever believe anything I say."
"Avengers: Doomsday" is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026, and while it promises to be a blockbuster, fans should temper their expectations regarding Chris Evans' return. With the actor firmly holding on to his "happily retired" status, it seems the next chapter of the "Avengers" saga will unfold without him.
