AceShowbiz - "Prince of Persia" is heading back to the big screen. More than a decade after the critical failure of the first adaptation "Prince of Persia: Sands of Time", a new live-action movie is reportedly in the works now at Disney.

Directed by Mike Newell, 2010's "Sands of Time" starred Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley, and Gemma Arterton. It held the record for the highest-grossing video game adaptation until 2016 when a "Warcraft" movie surpassed it.

Despite its global box office haul of $336.4 million against a budget of $150-200 million, the movie faced criticism for casting an American actor as the lead instead of an actor of Iranian descent.

In 2019, Gyllenhaal reflected on his experience with the film, "I think I learned a lot from that movie in that I spend a lot of time trying to be very thoughtful about the roles that I pick and why I'm picking them."

He acknowledged fans' criticisms about the casting choices, particularly his role as the Persian prince."You're bound to slip up and be like, 'That wasn't for me,' or 'That didn't fit perfectly,' " he said. "There have been a number of roles like that. And then a number of roles that do."

Rumors of the movie reboot come on the heels of significant changes within the game franchise itself. The Prince of Persia video game is also being rebooted. Originally scheduled for release in 2021, it was delayed indefinitely and failed to meet its subsequent target dates. Development was moved to Ubisoft Montréal, leading to a revised release window of 2026.

As we await further details on the movie and the video game remakes, both fans and critics will be watching closely, speculating whether these new ventures will cast Prince of Persia in the bright light it deserves.
