AceShowbiz - As "The Brutalist" garners seven nominations at the 82nd Golden Globes, actor Joe Alwyn talked about his role. Alwyn plays Harry, the privileged son of an industrialist (Guy Pearce), shared intriguing insights into intriguing insights into his character's development.
The film, directed by Brady Corbet, tells the compelling story of Hungarian immigrant László Tóth, portrayed by Adrien Brody, who is recruited by a wealthy client to create a monumental architectural piece.
Speaking to The Guardian, Alwyn disclosed that his portrayal was significantly influenced by the dynamics of then-President-elect Donald Trump and his children. "Look who's the new president of America, and his family," Alwyn remarked. "Often family businesses are so insular and stunted and hollow. And you see it with Trump and his children: 'I can do what I want.' "
The film has been lauded since its debut at the Venice Film Festival, earning critical acclaim and becoming a strong contender for the upcoming Academy Awards. Nonetheless, Alwyn confessed he initially had doubts about the film's broad appeal.
"To be honest, I thought it might be a really good film that not many people would end up seeing… Who knows, maybe it still will? I hope not," Alwyn said. He acknowledged the challenges the film faced, pointing out its unconventional length and content.
"But given the things against it, given that it ticks most boxes of what you're not meant to make as a film these days: length, content, all of that - anything on top of that is a really nice surprise," he added.
Despite these initial apprehensions, "The Brutalist" has become a critical darling, proving that films with unique narratives and controversial subjects can indeed captivate audiences and earn recognition. As the awards season progresses, it will be exciting to see whether the film continues its winning streak and what accolades it may ultimately bring home.
