When two of the film industry's powerhouses, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jon M. Chu, showcase choreography that seems oddly familiar, questions arise: is it homage, coincidence, or something else?

AceShowbiz - During production on "In The Heights" in 2021, Lin-Manuel Miranda and director Jon M. Chu forged a close friendship. As industry heavyweights, both released major films in 2024: Miranda wrote songs for "Mufasa: The Lion King" while Chu directed "Wicked."
Despite not collaborating on these projects, similarities in choreography between "In The Heights" and "Wicked" have sparked discussion. Lin-Manuel Miranda playfully called out Chu, prompting a response from the "Wicked" director.
"Chris Scott, our choreographer, was aware of our work in 'In The Heights,' " Chu explained. "We enjoy paying homage to our own work, so there may be some 'breadcrumbs.' I can't confirm or deny it."
Choreographer Christopher Scott elaborated, "Oz is as fantastical as Washington Heights, and we aimed to show their beauty on a grand scale. Lin has a sharp eye, so of course he noticed. I choreographed both films, so it's like copying from myself."
Miranda and Chu acknowledge the similarities, considering them a tribute to their own work. While both scenes take place in nail salons, it's unclear if the similarities were intentional or unnoticed.
"Was that an homage, or did you just figure no one really saw it the first time?" Miranda jokingly asked Chu.
Despite the playful banter, it's clear that the accusations stem from admiration for "Wicked," which has garnered rave reviews and is expected to continue its success with a sequel in 2025.
