Reynolds said that Marvel's approval stemmed from seeing Tatum's performance in action, much like how the leaked Deadpool test footage in 2014 convinced the studio to move forward with that film. Reynolds hopes that "Deadpool & Wolverine" can serve as a similar proof of concept for Gambit.

"I honestly don't know what goes on behind closed doors in the bookkeeping sessions at Marvel, but I do know that they're obsessed with him in that role," Reynolds said on Entertainment Weekly's "Awardist" podcast. "It's kind of like the same situation I went through. Once you show that it works well, that's really what they need. Sometimes they just need to see it in action."

Prior to Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox, Tatum was set to headline his own Gambit movie. The film's development was ultimately shelved, but "Deadpool & Wolverine" provided Tatum with an opportunity to bring the character to life. A deleted scene released online revealed Gambit's survival, leaving fans speculating about his potential future in the MCU.

Marvel's alleged interest in Tatum's Gambit is further endorsed by his unique physicality and charm, according to Reynolds. Tatum's natural charisma and athleticism translate well to the role, making him an ideal actor to embody the character's distinctive signature moves.
