Meet Superman's own furry friend! David Corenswet's Man of Steel is confirmed to have an adorable sidekick in the upcoming comic book adaptation directed by James Gunn.

AceShowbiz - Superman's canine best friend, Krypto the Superdog, will soon make his live-action debut thanks to James Gunn's upcoming "Superman" film. The director confirmed Krypto's inclusion on social media, sharing how his own adopted dog, Ozu, influenced this creative decision.

Gunn detailed his journey with Ozu, a rescue dog from a hoarding situation with 60 other dogs, noting how challenging it was to integrate Ozu into his home. "Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture - he even ate my laptop," Gunn shared.

This experience inspired Gunn to bring Krypto into the "Superman" screenplay. "I remember thinking, 'Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?' - and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life," Gunn continued. The journey from a challenging pet adoption to screenwriting shaped both Gunn's life and the storyline of the highly-anticipated film.

For the first time, Krypto will appear alongside David Corenswet's Superman in a live-action portrayal. This landmark moment for the character comes after numerous animated appearances, including the self-titled "Krypto the Superdog" series that aired on Cartoon Network from 2005 to 2006, and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's vocal performance in the 2022 animated film "DC League of Super-Pets" alongside Kevin Hart.

Krypto originally debuted in the 1955 DC Comics "Superboy" series, depicted as a loyal, super-powered dog from Superman's home planet of Krypton. With super strength, intelligence, and senses akin to the Man of Steel, Krypto has become an iconic figure in the DC universe.

In Gunn's "Superman," the character will bring his unique canine charm and superpowers to the forefront, with an early glimpse showing Superman and Krypto sitting together on the moon, looking out at Earth. This new iteration of Krypto promises to blend seamlessly into the revamped DC Studios universe that Gunn and Peter Safran are orchestrating.

The film, set for release on July 11, 2025, will feature an ensemble cast including Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and more. It promises to explore Superman's struggle to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing while embodying truth, justice, and the American way.

As October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, Gunn's announcement serves as a poignant reminder of the bond between humans and their rescue pets, offering a celebration of those not-so-perfect fur companions who ultimately bring out the best in us. As Gunn put it, "What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog month."
