James Gunn is a visionary American filmmaker who has reshaped the landscape of superhero cinema, known for his distinctive blend of irreverent humor, heartfelt emotion, and genre-savvy storytelling. Born James Francis Gunn Jr. on August 5, 1966, he launched his career in the mid-1990s as a screenwriter for the cult studio Troma Entertainment, penning the irreverent Shakespeare adaptation Tromeo and Juliet in 1996. This early work established his signature style, which he would later refine across both horror and comedy. Gunn transitioned into directing with the horror-comedy Slither in 2006, a film that showcased his knack for blending gross-out gore with sharp wit, but it was his leap into the superhero genre with the darkly comedic Super in 2010 that truly marked his arrival as a director to watch.

Gunn achieved global prominence with his work for Marvel Studios, writing and directing Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014. The film, based on a relatively obscure comic book team, became a massive critical and commercial success, lauded for its quirky characters, classic rock soundtrack, and Gunn's ability to balance laugh-out-loud moments with genuine pathos. He followed this with the equally successful Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in 2017, further cementing his reputation as a master of blockbuster storytelling. Beyond his directorial work, Gunn also contributed to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his writing credits include the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead and the live-action adaptations of Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. He also wrote and produced the horror-action film The Belko Experiment and produced the superhero-horror film Brightburn, while his involvement in the comedy anthology Movie 43 and the video game Lollipop Chainsaw highlighted his eclectic creative range.

In a major career pivot, Gunn was recruited by DC Comics to helm The Suicide Squad in 2021, a standalone sequel that was widely praised for its anarchic energy and character depth. This success led to the creation of the HBO Max series Peacemaker in 2022, which Gunn wrote and directed, further expanding the DC universe. That same year, he also wrote and directed the Disney+ special The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and released Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2023, a critically acclaimed conclusion to his Marvel trilogy. Gunn's influence on the superhero genre reached its zenith in 2022 when Warner Bros. Discovery appointed him and producer Peter Safran as co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios. In this role, Gunn has taken the creative helm of the DC Universe, a soft reboot of the DC Extended Universe, where he is the creator of the animated series Creature Commandos and the writer-director of the upcoming film Superman in 2025, marking a new era for the iconic franchise.
