John Ashton, known for his iconic portrayal of Detective Sergeant John Taggart in the 'Beverly Hills Cop' franchise with Eddie Murphy, has passed away at the age of 76.

Born on February 22, 1948, in Springfield, Massachusetts, John Ashton was raised in Enfield, Connecticut. He attended Enfield High School and later graduated from the University of Southern California with a BA in theater arts. Ashton's career began in the theater, touring the U.S. and U.K. before transitioning to television and film.
He made dozens of appearances on well-known series from the 1970s to the 2000s, including "Columbo", "M*A*S*H", "Dallas", and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit". His film career featured notable roles in movies such as "Midnight Run," "Some Kind of Wonderful," "She's Having a Baby," and "Gone Baby Gone."
Ashton's most iconic role came in 1984 when he starred as the by-the-book Detective Sgt. John Taggart in "Beverly Hills Cop" alongside Eddie Murphy and Judge Reinhold. He reprised his role in the sequels, appearing in 1987's "Beverly Hills Cop II" and 2024's "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F".

John Ashton was an avid golf enthusiast and a sport radio host for 870 ESPN Radio in Colorado. His obituary notes, "John leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication and service. John's impact on the world will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come."
Ashton is survived by his wife of 24 years, Robin Hoye, his children Michelle Ashton and Michael Thomas Ashton, and several stepchildren and grandchildren. His family requests that any donations be made to Pathways Hospice Care.
