AceShowbiz - The 2024 presidential election is rapidly approaching, and Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence, 34, has made it unequivocally clear who she's backing, Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. In an interview with PEOPLE, Lawrence underscored the critical importance of this election, "Abortion is literally on the ballot."
Lawrence praised Harris, stating, "I'm voting for Kamala Harris because I think she's an amazing candidate, and I know that she will do whatever she can to protect reproductive rights. That's the most important thing, is to not let somebody into the White House who is going to ban abortion." As an advocate for equal rights and a self-described feminist, Lawrence is leveraging her platform to urge others to vote for Harris.
In her effort to raise awareness, Lawrence is producing two documentary films through her production company Excellent Cadaver, "Bread and Roses" and "Zurawski v Texas". Both films tackle pressing issues surrounding women's rights and aim to educate audiences through powerful storytelling.
"Bread and Roses," directed by Afghan filmmaker Sahra Mani and co-produced by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai, explores the lives of Afghan women under Taliban rule. Lawrence remarked on the heroism of the women featured in the documentary, noting that their resilience and community spirit were profoundly inspiring.
"Zurawski v Texas", directed by Maisie Crow and Abbie Perrault and co-produced by Hillary and Chelsea Clinton, delves into the high-stakes legal battle where 20 women sued Texas for its restrictive abortion laws. Amanda Zurawski, one of the key figures in the case, was denied an abortion for a nonviable pregnancy, nearly losing her life and suffering permanent damage that prevents future pregnancies. Lawrence emphasized that "Women are dying," and hopes the documentary will "enlighten people's idea of what abortion is and why certain people need abortions."
Lawrence's involvement in these projects exemplifies her commitment to social and political causes. She suggests that her lack of formal education hasn't hindered her ability to engage with critical issues, stating that storytelling has been her primary source of education and a way to educate others.
The actress encourages her audience, especially young people, to take actionable steps, whether by voting, donating or volunteering. "The most important thing that we can do right now is just vote," Lawrence insists, emphasizing that voting is pivotal in protecting reproductive rights.
Joining a growing list of celebrities, including Taylor Swift, who are endorsing Kamala Harris, Lawrence aims to mobilize her fans and the public to participate actively in the upcoming election. Her advocacy serves as a call to action for those concerned about women's rights and the future political direction of the country.
