AceShowbiz - Eric Stonestreet has given up on the planned spinoff of "Modern Family" featuring his character, Cameron Tucker-Pritchett, and his work husband, Mitchell (played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson).
According to Stonestreet, the spinoff was originally planned to follow Cam, Mitchell, and their adopted daughter, Lily, as they move from California to Cam's native Missouri. However, after ABC's decision not to proceed with the project, Stonestreet admitted that the window for a spinoff has closed.
"I don't think it's potential anymore," Stonestreet said in an interview. "They had their chance. Chris Lloyd [series co-creator] and a couple of the writers wrote a really great script that spun Jesse and I off in our life in Missouri, and they said, 'No.' They just said, 'We don't want to do it.' "
Stonestreet expressed his disappointment in ABC's decision, believing that the spinoff would have been a success. "I think it would have been a slam dunk," he said. "I don't think it would have not been successful. Because you had one of the creators - who had really taken such great care of making sure that show was great for so long - willing to do it."
While admitting the rejection was "hurtful," Stonestreet remains hopeful for a reunion with his "Modern Family" castmates in the future. "I wish we'd do a Christmas special," he said. "I loved my character. I loved the show. I love Jesse. We had a great working relationship, we had amazing chemistry."
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who played Mitchell, also expressed his disappointment with the cancellation of the spinoff during an interview with Entertainment Tonight. "The script's out there and it's very good," Ferguson said. "So, you know, who knows? If someone wants to produce it, maybe."
Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who played Lily, expressed interest in a spinoff as well while acknowledging her educational priorities. "I'd definitely be interested if the script was good and the dads were on board," she said. "But school is my priority right now."
