Jennie Kim, a member of the South Korean girl group named Blackpink, has signed with Columbia Records as a solo artist. She will release her debut single in October.

AceShowbiz - Jennie Kim, a member of the South Korean girl group Blackpink, has signed with Columbia Records as a solo artist in partnership with her record label and entertainment company, Oddatelier. The company announced on Sunday that she will release her new solo single in October.

Kim first emerged as a member of Blackpink in 2016. The group has become the highest-charting female Korean act on the Billboard charts and the only artist from the country to headline Coachella. Last year, Kim collaborated with The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp on the song "One of the Girls" and appeared with them in the controversial HBO series "The Idol".

Kim was born in Korea but moved to and studied in Auckland, New Zealand when she was 10 years old. She spent five years there before returning to Korea and joining YG Entertainment's talent academy.

Blackpink has achieved significant success since its formation in 2016. The group has become the first female Korean act to have five music videos accumulate one billion views each on YouTube. They are also the most-followed girl group on Spotify.

On "The Idol", Kim plays a backup singer and dancer to Lily-Rose Depp's pop star character. She spoke about her acting experience last year on the BBC Sounds podcast "Dua Lipa: At Your Service."

"Acting was definitely one of the things that I've wanted to explore," Kim said. "But when I do something, when I decide to really go for it, I know I need to do it right. I wanted the new acting part of my life to be authentic."
