The star, known for his role as the dreamy surfer Moondoggie in the "Gidget" trilogy, died in his sleep at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. According to his son, Jim Moret, Darren had entered the hospital for an aortic valve replacement but was deemed too weak for the surgery.
Darren's early career saw him starring in significant roles, such as in "Let No Man Write My Epitaph" (1960) and "The Guns of Navarone" (1961). However, it was his portrayal of Moondoggie in the "Gidget" series that cemented his status as a teen idol. This role saw him acting alongside Sandra Dee, Deborah Walley and Cindy Carol through various sequels of the beloved surfing rom-com. "Thousands of girls were screaming out front. When I had to leave the building, they tackled me to the ground and pulled pieces of my hair out," Darren recalled of his sudden rise to fame.
Darren's affinity for music was evident as he transitioned to singing hits like "Goodbye Cruel World", which reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1961, and "Her Royal Majesty" in 1962. His musical talents reappeared in the '90s when he revived his singing career through his role as Vic Fontaine in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", delivering Frank Sinatra-styled performances.
On television, Darren was not just Moondoggie. He played Dr. Tony Newman on "The Time Tunnel", a favorite of actor Tom Hanks, and later starred on "T.J. Hooker" alongside William Shatner, both acting and directing episodes. Darren's directorial pursuits extended to shows such as "Melrose Place" and "Beverly Hills, 90210".
James Darren's legacy extends beyond the screen and the stage. Nancy Sinatra, in an emotional post, called him "one of my dearest, closest friends in all the world, of all my life," reflecting the deep personal connections he maintained.
He is survived by his wife, Evy Norlund, his sons and five grandchildren. Darren's career might have started with a teenage surfing fantasy, but his reach stretched across decades, genres and media, leaving an indelible mark on Hollywood history.
