AceShowbiz - It has taken 36 years for Tim Burton to release the sequel to his beloved film "Beetlejuice", and the director admits that a third installment could take another few decades.
Speaking ahead of the U.K. premiere of "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice", Burton expressed his doubts about continuing the franchise due to his advanced age. "Well, if [the same] time frame goes on, I'll be about 100. So maybe. I doubt it," he told The Hollywood Reporter.
Despite the gap, Burton was drawn back to the characters of "Beetlejuice" for the sequel. He explained, "The Lydia character (Winona Ryder) interested me. Getting older is where you start thinking about what happens in life. So it felt more right to make this now."
The sequel has been well-received, garnering a warm standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival. It features returning cast members Michael Keaton, Ryder and Catherine O'Hara, along with Jenna Ortega as Lydia's daughter.
Ortega, who has become a rising star in the horror genre, was thrilled to collaborate with Burton. "Working with him is a dream," she said.
Willem Dafoe, who plays a ghost cop in the sequel, praised Burton's unique filmmaking style. "It's really handmade stuff. It's really artigianale, it's not the stuff that's done in post [production]. It has a kind of playful, goofy aesthetic, but it still sticks with the horror genre," he gushed.
While a third "Beetlejuice" film is unlikely in the near future, Burton's legacy with the franchise remains strong. The first film, released in 1988, remains a cult classic, and the sequel has received positive reviews, ensuring that the zany and horrifying world of "Beetlejuice" will continue to entertain audiences for years to come.
