The 'As Long as I Got You' singer admits to having a 'distressing' week as 'people have been furiously reacting' to her confession about returning the dog to an animal shelter.

AceShowbiz - Lily Allen has admitted to having a "distressing" week amid backlash. After confessing that she returned a "badly behaved" dog to a shelter, the "As Long as I Got You" singer revealed that she has been receiving death threats and "disgusting comments."

On Sunday, August 25, the 39-year-old singer made use of Instagram Stories to share an update amid criticisms that she got for returning a dog named Mary. She wrote, " 'We tried very hard and for a very long time but the passports were the straw that broke the camels back.' This is the part of the podcast that the tabloids decided not to quote in their articles about me 'dumping my puppy.' "

Lily went on to share, "People have been furiously reacting to a deliberately distorted cobbling together of quotes designed to make people angry and as a result, I've received some really abhorrent messages including death threats, some of the most disgusting comments have been all over my social media channels, and i'm really not surprised because this is exactly what those articles are designed to do."

The "Shame for You" singer admitted, "I'm ok but it has been a really tough few days that has impacted me and my family," before going into details about how the dog "developed pretty severe separation anxiety and would act out in all manner of ways." She also stressed, "And after many months and much deliberation everyone was in agreement that our home wasn't the best fit for Mary, the person that she was rehomed with was known to us and that rehoming happened within 24 hours of her being returned."

Lily continued, "I've had rescue dogs pretty consistently throughout my life since I was 4 years old, I'm pretty good at ascertaining a dogs need, I have never been accused of mistreating an animal, and I've found this whole week distressing."

Lily further asked social media users to "please stop acting on clickbait articles when you haven't done your due diligence." Near the end of the lengthy message, she called out PETA, an American animal rights organization, writing, "Also thank you to @peta for adding fuel to the fire. very responsible of you."

Lily Allen revealed she received death threats following her controversial confession.

The Stories came after Lily confessed to returning Mary, which she adopted in 2021, to the shelter in the Thursday, August 22 episode of her "Miss Me?" podcast. She explained that the dog destroyed her and her family's passports, which contained their visas for international travel. The incident prevented her from taking her daughters to see their father Sam Cooper, who lives in England, for several months.
