Director Todd Phillips reveals how the two stars delve deeply into their roles for the upcoming sequel 'Joker: Folie a Deux', saying that the actress stayed in character 'a Lot More' than Phoenix did.

AceShowbiz - Lady GaGa and Joaquin Phoenix have a reputation for their intense dedication to their craft. In "Joker: Folie a Deux", the sequel to 2019's hit "Joker", they push their limits even further.

GaGa portrays the obsessive asylum inmate Harleen "Lee" Quinzel, also known as Harley Quinn. Phoenix returns as Arthur Fleck, now facing the death penalty and entangled in a twisted romance with Lee.

Director Todd Phillips confirms that both actors embraced their roles with unwavering commitment. While Phoenix maintains a balance in his approach, GaGa often remains in character for extended periods.

"I don't even really know what Method means," Phillips told Variety. "Does he take it seriously? Does she take it seriously? Hell, yeah. But he doesn't stay in character 24 hours a day. With her, I'd say she does a lot more of that than he does. But as a director, I'm in favor of whatever it takes to get them to the place they need to be."

Phillips supports their methods, believing it enhances their performances. "I love the chaos that comes with that," he added. "Most of us walk around with this version that we sort of present to the world, but there's this shadow self. And I'm always fascinated with people when that mask slips off and this other side emerges."

Phoenix lost a significant amount of weight for the first "Joker" film, affecting his mental state. GaGa, known for her Method acting, has previously stated that it allows her to fully immerse herself in a character.

For "Joker: Folie a Deux", GaGa's portrayal of Harley Quinn departs from the traditional high-pitched, sassy interpretation. Phillips explains they aimed for a more realistic character that aligns with the gritty world of Gotham.

Phillips finds inspiration in the moments when a character's façade crumbles, revealing their true nature. He believes GaGa and Phoenix excel at capturing this duality.

"Joker: Folie a Deux" incorporates musical elements and surprises, further enhancing its complexity. GaGa describes her version of Harley as authentic and unique to the film.

The film is set to hit theaters on October 4, promising a captivating and intense experience for audiences.
