Horror maestro James Wan, known for his spine-chilling franchises 'Saw' and 'The Conjuring,' dives back into the eerie waters with a fresh take on the '50s classic, 'Creature From the Black Lagoon.'

AceShowbiz - James Wan, the innovative mind behind some of the most successful horror franchises like "Saw" and "The Conjuring," is set to breathe new life into a timeless classic. Wan is developing a modernized remake of "Creature From the Black Lagoon" and is in early discussions to direct the project for Universal Pictures.
The 1954 original, directed by Jack Arnold and featuring Julie Adams and Richard Carlson, introduced audiences to the Gill-Man, a prehistoric water-breathing monster from the Amazon. Over the decades, various directors, including Guillermo del Toro, attempted to revive the black-and-white monster movie, but none succeeded in bringing the Gill-Man back to the big screen.
Wan's version is described as a "grounded modernized retelling that leans into visceral horror whilst paying respect to the original classic." Fans can expect a return to Wan's horror roots after his successful stint in blockbuster cinema with "Furious 7" and "Aquaman."
This project is the first that Wan has attached himself to as a director following the merger of his production company, Atomic Monster, with Blumhouse, known for their horror hits like "M3GAN," "The Nun," and "Annabelle." Michael Clear and Judson Scott from Atomic Monster will serve as executive producers, while Universal's executive VP of production development, Jay Polidoro, will oversee the project for the studio.
The remake is part of Universal's renewed focus on individual classic monster properties after the failure of their interconnected Dark Universe initiative, which floundered with the box office disaster of Tom Cruise's "The Mummy." This strategy shift has seen mixed results, with successes like "The Invisible Man" (2020) and flops like "Renfield."
Wan's vast experience with horror, combined with his knack for blockbuster filmmaking, positions him uniquely for this remake. With two films grossing over a billion dollars globally, Wan is a celebrated director whose return to horror is highly anticipated.
Stay tuned as Universal and James Wan prepare to reintroduce the legendary Gill-Man to contemporary audiences. Given Wan's track record and the legacy of the "Creature From the Black Lagoon," this upcoming film might just make waves in the horror genre.
