AceShowbiz - Julia Louis-Dreyfus, renowned for her portrayal as the fictional Vice President Selina Meyer on HBO's "Veep", has pledged to go "extra-involved" in Kamala Harris' presidential campaign. In an interview with The Sunday Times, Louis-Dreyfus revealed her plans to record an advertisement instructing Americans overseas on how to vote.
Despite the comparisons drawn between Harris and her "Veep" character, Louis-Dreyfus dismissed the notion that Harris should seek any advice from her fictional alter ego. She attributed the comparisons to sexism faced by female candidates.
"Female candidates are more scrutinized," Louis-Dreyfus stated. "We played into it and used it to our comedic advantage...There is an episode in which a character suggests Selina open a speech with 'As a woman' and she said, 'I can't identify as a woman! People can't know that! Men hate that and women who hate women hate that, which I believe is most women.' "
However, the show's creator Armando Iannucci has previously denied any direct inspiration from Harris for the character of Selina Meyer.
Despite the debates surrounding the comparisons, Louis-Dreyfus has expressed her admiration for Harris and her potential as a leader. She is reportedly considering an appearance at the Democratic National Convention, where Harris is expected to formally accept the party's nomination.
Meanwhile, Harris is narrowing down her choices for a potential running mate. She is expected to unveil her pick imminently and campaign alongside them in Philadelphia.
