A sequel to the 2003 body-swap comedy from Disney is in the works with Elyse Hollander penning the script as the two stars express interest in reprising their roles during a new interview about the film.

AceShowbiz - A "Freaky Friday" sequel is on the way with Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis expected to return. Nearly 20 years since the original film hit theaters, the sequel is in the works at Disney with Elyse Hollander penning the script.

Rumors about the sequel started circulating in February, when Curtis posted a photo of her and Lohan on Instagram with the caption, "It's Friday. I'm just sayin! Freaky fingers crossed!"

In an interview with Variety at the Producers Guild Awards on February, the Oscar winner expressed confidence as saying, "It's going to happen." She added, "Without saying there's anything officially happening, I'm looking at you in this moment and saying, 'Of course it's going to happen.' It's going to happen."

Now, in a new interview with The New York Times in honor of the movie's 20-year anniversary, both Curtis and Lohan confirmed that they are open to reprising their roles as a mother and daughter duo. "As I went around the world with 'Halloween Ends', people wanted to know if there was going to be another 'Freaky Friday'. Something really touched a chord. When I came back, I called my friends at Disney and said, 'It feels like there's a movie to be made,' " Curtis said.

"Jamie and I are both open to that, so we're leaving it in the hands that be," added Lohan, who is currently expecting her first baby. "We would only make something that people would absolutely adore."

Recalling their working experience on the set of the movie, Curtis said that her relationship with the "Mean Girls" star "was very easy" from the start. The 36-year-old, meanwhile, remembered that her on-screen mother "immediately took me under her wing." She elaborated, "I was so nervous to do my first kiss on camera, so she talked to me in my trailer and made it funny so that I wouldn't stress about it."

"Freaky Friday" was based on Mary Rodgers' 1972 novel of the same title, which has been adapted into several films, including versions in 1976, 1995 and 2018. The 2003 movie, which starred Curtis and Lohan, grossed $160 million globally. Mark Waters directed the film with a script by Heather Hach and Leslie Dixon, but there's still no word on who will be directing the sequel.
