After facing a storm of criticism due to his controversial decisions, the owner of the micro-blogging site says that he will leave his position if voted out by a poll he tweets.

AceShowbiz - Elon Musk is apparently looking for a way out of the mess that he's created. After drawing backlash with his controversial decisions since appointing himself as CEO of Twitter after buying the company in October, the billionaire is now considering stepping down as the head of Twitter.

The 51-year-old leaves his future at Twitter in the hands of other users of the micro-blogging site. On Sunday, December 18, he launched a poll that asked, "Should I step down as head of Twitter?" as he added, "I will abide by the results of this poll."

So far, more than 12 million people have voted. As of Sunday evening, "Yes" was winning by a margin of 56.4% to 43.6%. Five hours are left before the poll is closed.

As the poll is gradually nearing its end, Elon seemingly warned people of the repercussion of their votes. "As the saying goes, be careful what you wish, as you might get it," he wrote in a follow-up tweet.

Elon has faced a storm of criticism since taking over as the head of Twitter. Among his baffling moves were firing several top executives and laying off about half of Twitter's staff. He then gave an ultimatum to the remaining staff that they need to do "extremely hardcore" work or leave, prompting more employees to quit.

The billionaire has also reinstated some of the platform's permanently banned accounts, including those of former President Donald Trump and Kanye West, though the rapper's account has subsequently been suspended again due to "incitement to violence."

Later in November, Twitter announced it would no longer enforce a policy to combat misinformation about the Covid pandemic. "Effective November 23, 2022, Twitter is no longer enforcing the COVID-19 misleading information policy," a note on Twitter's transparency pages read.

Most recently, Elon used his power to silence journalists and a flight-tracker, whom he claimed violated the company's new rule by revealing people's real-time locations. He has since reinstated the accounts of some journalists whom he accused of "doxxing" him.
