The animated superhero comedy film steals the first place from last week's newcomer and champion, 'Nope', despite its soft debut at the domestic box office.

AceShowbiz - "DC League of Super-Pets" has conquered the box office. The animated adventure about the four-legged friends of legendary superheroes easily tops the chart with a modest debut of an estimated $23 million from 4,313 theaters in North America.

The superhero comedy film powered through the sluggish week despite its mediocre start given the film's $90 million price tag. It failed to continue the positive trend shown by other kid-friendly movies such as Pixar's "Lightyear", which debuted to $51 million, and Universal's "Minions: The Rise of Gru", which opened to a strong $107 million, which gave hope of the return of parents and their kids to theaters following the COVID-19 pandemic.

"This is a moderate opening by animation series standards," said David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. "Recently, several animation movies have extended their runs to six weeks, generating healthy domestic multiples."

"DC League of Super-Pets", which boasts such A-listers as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Kevin Hart, Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski and Keanu Reeves in the voice cast, actually received mostly positive reviews from critics, with an average rating of 6.40/10. It echoes the audiences' reception as they gave the film an average grade of "A-" on an A+ to F scale, according to CinemaScore.

Despite the soft debut, "DC League of Super-Pets" manages to knock down last week's champion "Nope" to the runner-up place. The third feature film and latest horror flick from Jordan Peele added an estimated $18.5 million, dropping 58.2% percent from its first weekend.

"Thor: Love and Thunder" is also down one place to No. 3 with approximately $13.1 million. It has now collected $301.5 million domestically and $360.9 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $662.4 million.

"Minions: The Rise of Gru" falls to No. 4 with an estimated $10.9 million, while "Top Gun: Maverick" maintains its position at No. 5 with approximately $8.2 million.
