The star's Netflix comedy special is nominated for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-recorded), with Stan Lathan earning a nomination for outstanding directing of a variety special for his work on 'The Closer'.

AceShowbiz - Despite receiving huge backlash for his transphobic remarks in "The Closer", Dave Chappelle earned a number of accolades in the Primetime Emmy nominations, which were announced on Tuesday, July 12. It didn't take long for people to express their frustration over the decision.

"Dave Chappelle getting Emmy noms for his transphobic special is just disgusting," entertainment guru Shannon O'Connor wrote on Twitter. She added, "Do better, TV Academy."

Another disappointed user said, "dave chappelle's transphobic stand up special was nominated for an emmy……………. i'm sorry i don't ever want to hear any cishet man complain about cancel culture again. F**k. this is crushing." Echoing the sentiment, one person replied, "Disgusting. Another misfire from an awards ceremony. Even nominating that special is such a messed up thing to do."

"Dave Chappelle crying his p***y a** off about being 'cancelled' meanwhile the Emmy's nominated his garbage a** comedy special," another critic said. Meanwhile, someone sarcastically added, "Oh so Dave Chappelle has been canceled directly into an Emmy nomination."

Dave's comedy special is nominated for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-recorded), going against Netflix's "Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special", CBS' "Adele: One Night Only" and "One Last Time: An Evening With Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga" as well as HBO Max's "Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts". Additionally, Stan Lathan earns a nomination for outstanding directing of a variety special for his work on "The Closer".

Released in October 2021, "The Closer" ignited social media backlash from LGBTQ+ community as many deemed Dave's remarks about trans people offensive. Netflix employees also staged a walkout in protest.

In the controversial special, Dave said, "Gender is a fact. Every human being in this room, every human being on earth, had to pass through the legs of a woman to be on earth. That is a fact." He went on to say, "Now, I am not saying that to say trans women aren't women, I am just saying that those p***ies that they got… you know what I mean? I'm not saying it's not p***y, but it's Beyond P***y or Impossible P***y. It tastes like p***y, but that's not quite what it is, is it? That's not blood. That's beet juice."
