Speaking about the new historical horror drama, director Karim Ainouz claims that the 'Brokeback Mountain' star was the first actress he thought of for the role of Catherine Parr.

AceShowbiz - Michelle Williams will play the wife who survived King Henry VIII in a new historical horror drama. The "Brokeback Mountain" star has been cast as Catherine Parr, opposite Jude Law's Henry in "Firebrand".

Parr was the king's sixth and final wife, who outlived Henry. The new film will chronicle how she thrived in a marriage to a monster, who beheaded two former partners.

Director Karim Ainouz tells Deadline that Williams was the first actress he thought of for the role of Parr.

"This a woman who deserves a portrait. There has been much depicted on the king and the wives that perished," he says. "It's important to look at someone who turns out to be stronger than the forces around them. This is a modernistic look at the classic trope of the woman trapped in a castle with a monster..."

"Henry was a most interesting person, but he was uber-violent, which was in tune with the times. Jude will not play him as the cliched fat man eating the turkey leg. Jude got how complex this guy was, not a loveable character but as a most powerful man of his time. And Michelle immediately came to mind. I so admire her choices, going back to 'Brokeback Mountain', and there is something fascinating about her each time I rediscover her in a performance."

Gabrielle Tana of Magnolia Mae Films will produce this film which is written by Henrietta and Jessica Ashworth. About working with Ainouz and Williams on the project, she said as quoted by Variety, "I love all of Karim's work to date and I'm so excited to be working with him. I know that Michelle will do glorious work with Karim."
