Defending herself against allegations that she's profiting from the coronavirus fears, Tala Alamuddin says she just wants to 'help' with the luxury masks and profits from the sales will go to the Singapore Red Cross.

AceShowbiz - Amal Clooney's sister Tala Alamuddin has defended herself after she received criticism for selling $33 masks amid the coronavirus pandemic. The sister-in-law of George Clooney is accused of profiting from the crisis with the luxury masks, but she insists that it wasn't her intent.

Explaining the reason why she's selling the mask called Le Masque, Tala tells Page Six, "When I heard there were no masks and no toilet paper, I thought, 'I can't make toilet paper, but I can make masks.' I was just trying to do what I could."

While the masks are not medically certified, Tala says, "It protects as much as possible, but [they] are not medically certified ... This is better than nothing." She goes on saying about the leopard-print and camouflage design, "Why not add joy and something that looks good in the midst of misery? It's a little injection of a good feeling. That's all."

On the accusation that she's trying to make herself richer amid the crisis, Tala, who lives in Singapore, says that the profits from the sales go to the Singapore Red Cross and the rest goes to the manufacturers. "I don't want to make anything from this," she claims. "I want to help."

Tala is selling the luxury masks on her fashion website. She explained the masks to Hello, "Masks are a staple in Asian households, and used regularly for colds, pollution and cosmetic recovery. Our masks are NOT N95 certified, and should be considered a physical barrier for sneezing and colds ... but they are not medically certified."

Criticizing the fashion masks, one person wrote, "I think it's completely tone-deaf and tacky for her to be exploiting the coronavirus just to make a profit." The said critics added that it's "wrong for her to try and make a face mask some trendy new fashion accessory. Those masks will do absolutely nothing from protecting people. She's using people's fear to make money, and it's disgusting."
