Producer Daniel Lin claims that Warner Bros. has been working to bring a fifth and final 'Lethal Weapon' film, with director Richard Donner also on board to return for the new installment.

AceShowbiz - A new "Lethal Weapon" movie could be coming more than 20 years since the last film hit theaters. According to producer Daniel Lin, the original main actors, Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, are ready to return for the fifth and final installment of the buddy cop action comedy film series.

During The Hollywood Reporter's Producers Roundtable chat, Lin said, "We're trying to make the last 'Lethal Weapon' movie." He added, "The original cast is coming back... Mel and Danny are ready to go."

Lin, who has produced movies like "Sherlock Holmes", "It", "Gangster Squad" and "The Lego Movie", additionally claimed that Dick Donner, who helmed all four "Lethal Weapon" movies, is on board to return for the fifth movie. "And Dick Donner's coming back," he said.

He went on gushing, "And it's just amazing. The story itself is very personal to him." While the project has not received an official green light yet, Lin said it's now just "about the script."

Talks about the potential "Lethal Weapon 5" first started in 2007, but it never showed any actual progress. Then in 2017, Gibson hinted that the fifth movie was in development, with Donner likely returning in the director's chair.

Also dishing on the upcoming installment, Donner said last year that if the movie ended up being made, it would be called "Lethal Finale" and would be "very dark." He said that Channing Gibson, who penned the fourth movie, was writing the script of the fifth movie. Donner, however, said on the Maltin on Movies podcast that he wasn't too confident of it getting the green light.

The first "Lethal Weapon" movie was released in 1987. It follows near-retirement homicide detective Roger Murtaugh (Glover), who's unexpectedly paired with wild narcotics detective Martin Riggs (Gibson), who has suicidal tendencies.

The franchise was revived with a "Lethal Weapon" TV series starring Damon Wayans and Clayne Crawford which premiered on FOX in 2016. The show was canceled in 2019 after Wayans decided to quit following the end of season 3 production in December 2018.
