As she counts down to the debut of 'The Kelly Clarkson Show', the 'Since U Been Gone' hitmaker looks back at the talent competition that paved her way to stardom, explaining why she applied to it.

AceShowbiz - Kelly Clarkson has admitted being a contestant on the first season of "American Idol" "wasn't fun".

The "Since U Been Gone" hitmaker went on to win the inaugural series of the talent competition and has since enjoyed a successful music career. And while the star is soon to debut her new talk show "The Kelly Clarkson Show", she told People her journey to the spotlight wasn't as easy as some may think.

"Everyone looks at talent shows on TV now like it's normal. It was not normal my first season and a lot of people didn't like it," she shared. "It was not fun in the beginning."

Kelly, 37, also told the publication she applied to the programme to hit back at the "jerks in my life telling me what I should be doing".

"'This is what a pop star should do, blah blah blah,'" she recalled them saying. "It really helped me signify for myself what I should be doing for me."

And while it may not have been exactly what she expected, the star confessed she's grateful for the show for giving her a career, adding: "(From) cocktail waitress to having your own show. It's cool."

"The Kelly Clarkson Show" debuts on NBC on 9 September.
