The veteran rock band and the 'American Idol' alum kick off the annual event with rendition of 'We Will Rock You' and 'We Are the Champions'.

AceShowbiz - As there is no host to open the 91st Academy Awards on Sunday, February 24, the responsibility fell on the shoulders of Queen and Adam Lambert. The collaborators kicked off the annual event which took place at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles by performing two of the veteran rock band's classics "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions".

Brian May was the first to appear on stage, playing the iconic beat of "We Will Rock You" that got everyone on their feet. The "American Idol" runner-up then roared out the song's lyrics in a sparkling turquoise jacket and black pants, teaming it up with matching back shirt and cravat. The group quickly launched into "We Are the Championship", making the audience wave their hands in the air. The likes of Tom Cruise and Jennifer Lopez could be seen singing along to the lyrics.

By the end of the performance, footage of late Freddie Mercury was flickered on the screen as the crowd gave the group a standing ovation. Rami Malek, who portrayed the band's frontman in "Bohemian Rhapsody" was briefly shown seated in the crowd as he enjoyed the performance. "Welcome to the Oscars!" Adam shouted to the audience.

"Bohemian Rhapsody", which chronicles the life and career of Freddie Mercury, is up for nominations at the 2019 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Film Editing and Best Sound Editing. Rami is also nominated for Best Actor, vying against Bradley Cooper ("A Star Is Born"), Viggo Mortensen ("Green Book") and Christian Bale ("Vice (2018)"). Should the "Mr. Robot" star wins the accolade, he will be the first actor to win the trophy while being a series regular.

The biopic and its star have already enjoyed a successful award season prior to this, taking home Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture - Drama as well as Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama.

The 91st Academy Awards are currently airing on ABC.
