Demi's little sister Madison De La Garza is grateful that the singer's alive for her birthday following a drug overdose scare.

AceShowbiz - Demi Lovato's actress sister Madison De La Garza has marked the singer's 26th birthday by "thanking God" she is still alive following a drug overdose scare.

The Confident hitmaker was hospitalised in late July after she was found unresponsive in her Los Angeles home, and she was treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for just over a week as she recovered.

Demi, who has a history of drink and drug abuse, has since checked into a rehabilitation facility to help her regain her sobriety, and on Monday, August 20, former Desperate Housewives child star Madison took to Instagram to express her gratitude at being able to celebrate another birthday together.

"Today could have been one of the worst days of my life, but instead i get to spend it thanking God, the incredible doctors, demi's team, and everyone across the world who offered their support - without all of these people i wouldn't have my big sister anymore (sic)," the 16 year old wrote beside an old photo of the half-siblings.

Madison went on to share some of the "silly little things" she loves about Demi, fondly describing how her "nostrils move when she says certain words" and how the birthday girl likes to brush De La Garza's hair when she is trying to sleep.

"those are the things i'm thankful for today," she continued. "they seem so small, but those little things make up my sister - not a singer, not a celebrity, and definitely not what she's been described as in the media - she's a daughter, a friend, and my big sister... and i am so, so thankful that i can tell her happy birthday".

Demi had been clean for six years before suffering a relapse this summer, which she confessed to in her recent song Sober, but, in a statement released earlier this month, she vowed to "keep fighting".

"I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction," Demi wrote on Instagram. "What I've learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet".

She explained she would be taking some time to focus on her sobriety and "road to recovery", adding: "The love you have all shown me will never be forgotten and I look forward to the day where I can say I came out on the other side. I will keep fighting".
