The survey is to mark the 60th anniversary of the Billboard Hot 100.

AceShowbiz - Elton John has emerged as the king of the U.S. pop charts in a survey marking the 60th anniversary of the Billboard Hot 100.

The countdown first appeared on 4 August, 1958 and since then, Sir Elton has logged nine number ones, 27 top 10s and a total of 67 entries, according to Billboard.

That puts him ahead of Elvis Presley and Stevie Wonder among the top-performing solo male artists in the chart's history.

The Rocket Man singer's biggest hit in America is the 1997 revamp of his 1973 track Candle in the Wind, in memory of Princess Diana, which spent 14 weeks at number one.

Elvis comes in second, followed by Wonder, Michael Jackson, and Paul McCartney. Usher, Prince, Rod Stewart, Drake, and Marvin Gaye complete the top 10.

Meanwhile, The Twist by Chubby Checker has been named the most successful chart hit, topping the countdown twice - in 1960 and 1962. Santana's 1999 hit with Rob Thomas, Smooth, comes in second, ahead of Bobby Darin's Mack the Knife.

Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars' Uptown Funk! and LeAnn Rimes' chart-topping 1997 ballad How Do I Live complete the top five.
