After receiving backlash for calling the late designer 'an inspiring accessory,' he deletes the tweet and posts a new tweet that read, 'We lost a true visionary today.'

AceShowbiz - Designer Kenneth Cole has revamped his tribute to tragic Kate Spade after upsetting her followers by suggesting she was "an accessory".

Shortly after learning of Kate's suicide on Tuesday, June 05, Cole offered up his thoughts in a cryptic tweet, which many found insensitive.

"She alone didn't change the handbag world but she was an inspiring accessory. #KateSpade #RIP," he wrote, prompting a backlash from followers.

Cole returned to social media hours later and reworked his tribute, writing: "Kate Spade left an indelible mark on the fashion industry and her inspiring life and work will be missed. We lost a true visionary today. My heart goes out to her family and to all she has touched."

He also deleted his original tweet and explained it by telling Page Six, "I often say, 'We may not heel the world, but we hope to be an accessory'. After posting the tweet, I realised there may have been room for misinterpretation."

Spade's family members have also released a statement after the 55 year old was found hanging in her Park Avenue home in Manhattan.

"We are all devastated by today's tragedy," the statement reads. "We loved Kate dearly and will miss her terribly. We would ask that our privacy be respected as we grieve during this very difficult time."

Kate is survived by her husband, Andy, and her 13-year-old daughter, Frances.

Diane Von Furstenberg, Bette Midler, Diane Warren, Chelsea Clinton, and Josh Groban are also among the celebrities and fashion elite who have taken to Twitter to remember Kate.
