The former 'America's Got Talent' host praises his ex-wife for her strength in dealing with the health issue, saying, '(She is) one of the most powerful women and spirits I've ever come across.'

AceShowbiz - Nick Cannon is "in awe" of his ex-wife Mariah Carey following her bipolar disorder reveal. The "Hero" singer went public with her diagnosis last week (ends April 13), and told People magazine she was in denial after first being diagnosed with the condition in 2001, when she was hospitalised for a physical and mental breakdown.

"I was so terrified of losing everything, I convinced myself the only way to deal with this was to not deal with this," Mariah explained. "Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me. It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn't do that anymore."

Cannon, who shares six-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe with the singer, is now praising his former wife for her candour. "I'm in awe of her strength," he tells People magazine. "Every family has to deal with something, but through love and understanding is how anyone gets through any adversity. And that's what we've always been about."

And he insists they still make it a priority to keep their co-parenting relationship respectful. "Her and I, we've always had a strong understanding and a strong love for each other, and I think that's why, to this day, it still works so well," Nick adds.

The 37-year-old also reveals Mariah is feeling confident about her decision to reveal her health struggle. "She's just happy being who she is," he continues. "She's one of those people who doesn't pay attention to anyone. I learned that from her - that was probably one of the greatest lessons I learned from her. All of that outside noise is just clutter. You can't pay attention to what's going on out there, especially when you're dealing with the power within. And she has so much power and so much strength."

"(She is) one of the most powerful women and spirits I've ever come across," he gushes.
