Lena Dunham and Jack Antonoff have called it quits after more than five years together. A source has confirmed to E! News that the 31-year-old actress and the 33-year-old singer/songwriter, who started dating in 2012, broke up in December.

"It was mutual," the insider reveals to the publication. The "Girls" star and the Bleachers frontman reportedly "were growing apart and it just made sense for them to end their relationship where it was."

The insider assures fans that the split was far from messy as saying, "They want the best for each other no matter what," adding that "they are both moving on."

The pair's impending engagement has long been the subject of gossip. Just two months ago, Dunham added fuel to the rumor by revealing on Twitter that she'd mistakenly thought she overheard Antonoff talking about popping the question.

"I thought Jack was furtively planning a proposal [a ring emoji] to me with his sister and he just admitted I actually caught him 'talking s**t' about me!" she shared. "Now I literally can't sleep cuz I'm laughing too hard and I am also keeping him awake," she continued, before gushing about their ring-less relationship, "5.5 years, no rock and you know what? It's real nice."

"Also they were huddled and I heard him say 'Lena' and 'finger' so obviously it seemed like an engagement ring talk," Dunham added, before jokingly saying, "Anyway I want Cardi B's ring."

Dunham and Antonoff were seen attending their last public event together almost one year ago at a Grammys pre-party. In October 2017, the Lenny Letter creator penned an essay about her then boyfriend for Variety.

"It's safe to say that before Jack my life was full of far fewer sights," she wrote in part. The actress shared the three-time Grammy-winning musician "showed me the importance of making political statements using your public platform. He showed me the joy of collaboration."
