The 45-year-old actor has decided to run for congress in California after being interested in politics and public policy for a long time.

AceShowbiz - Antonio Sabato Jr. is running for congress in California, according to documents filed with the Federal Election Commission on Monday, May 7. The actor, who is known for his roles on "General Hospital" and "Melrose Place", is challenging Rep. Julia Brownley who represents the southern central coast and most of Ventura County.

GOP strategist Charles Moran, who will serve as Sabato's fundraiser, confirms his run. He says that Sabato has been interested in politics and public policy, and his experiences at the convention made him consider running for office. According to Moran, Sabato plans to focus on veterans' needs and substance abuse.

"Being a Republican and with proximity to the White House and Republican leadership, he's going to be able to get more done being in the majority, with his notoriety, for the residents of the 26th [Congressional] District," Moran tells Los Angeles Times. Sabato was a supporter of President Donald Trump. He spoke at 2016 Republican National Convention on his behalf. In an interview with ABC News, he stated that Barack Obama was a Muslim. "We had a Muslim president for seven and a half years," he declared. However, the claim was untrue.

In 2016, the "Dancing with the Stars" alum claimed in an interview with Variety that he was blacklisted by Hollywood for supporting President Trump. "I choose Trump. I support everything he's going to do. A lot of people in America feel the same way. The industry doesn't like that. A lot of the bosses, a lot of the executives, they own the channels, they own the media," he said, before adding, "I'm never going to leave Hollywood. I'm going to go after it one way or another."
