Kendall Jenner is once again at the center of controversy, barely a month after she appeared in the now-pulled controversial Pepsi ad that drew such a concerted backlash. Vogue India is now facing the heat for featuring Kendall instead of an Indian model on the cover of its 10th anniversary issue.
The magazine shared on Instagram a photo of the cover, writing, "Kicking off our 10th anniversary celebrations: @mariotestino guest edits the May issue starring supermodel @KendallJenner shot in India." The photo found Kendall donning a unique mesh creation with her dark hair being pulled into a loose bun. She looked stunning in the photo as she gave fierce gaze to the camera.
Readers criticized the fashion magazine for featuring a non-Indian model. "Vogue 'India', celebrating its 10th anniversary in 'India', in a historic Indian palace... featuring an American model .....is it just me or did @vogueindia failed to see the irony in that...," one reader commented on Instagram.
Another commented on the magazine's Facebook page, writing, "Why not an Indian model there are so many??? This doesn't create the sense that India has its own beauty and character." Other users also suggested alternative cover models such as Indian actresses Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone.
A Vogue India spokesperson immediately issued a statement on its choice of Kendall as its latest cover model. "In the last 10 years, Vogue India has had only 12 international covers, including Kendall Jenner in 2017," the statement read. "Therefore, statistically, 90 percent of our covers are Indian! And we are proud of that." It continued, "After all, we are Vogue, an international brand, and we want to give the love back by featuring some of the best international celebrities on our covers. Occasionally!"
Meanwhile, representatives for Kendall have not addressed the issue yet.
