The singer looks dapper in tux with golden accent on the collars in the first still of the WGN series, on which he will guest star as Frederic Douglass.

AceShowbiz - In the midst of his hectic schedule, John Legend still finds time to make history. He is set to play author, abolitionist and American hero Frederick Douglass in the second season of WGN's series "Underground", a drama which follows fugitive slaves fighting for freedom prior the Civil War. New photo has been unveiled, featuring the very first look at the singer as Douglass.

Legend's Douglass sports fancy tailored-tux with his hair is styled in side-parted Afro. The photo features Douglass having a drink while talking to Cato (Alano Miller), the slave of dubious motives who escapes from the Georgia plantation and suddenly becomes rich and powerful.

Legend spoke of his character in a latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, "He understood the importance of strategy." He continued, "He understood the power of image and of story to humanize the slaves and to show how evil the institution was. If it weren't for him showing the human worth of slaves, we might not have seen abolition happen when it did."

Not only appearing on the series, the 38-year-old crooner also produces the second season of "Underground". He also pens a song titled "In America" specifically for the series. Legend has shown his interest in acting as he'd previously appeared in Oscar-winning movie "La La Land" as well as served as one of the executive producers.

"Underground" stars Aldis Hodge, Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Jessica De Gouw. Also starring on the series are Marc Blucas and Amirah Vann.

"Underground" sophomore season will premiere on Wednesday, March 8 at 10 P.M. on WGN America, while Legend's Douglass will appear later on April 5 episode.
