Movie

The 'Whale Rider' helmer is reportedly set to serve behind the lens for the live-action reboot of the 1998 animated hit.

AceShowbiz - Disney's live-action "Mulan" has found its director. According to multiple sites, Niki Caro has been tapped to direct the reboot to the 1998 animated hit. She will be the second female director working on a Disney movie with a big budget of over $100 million, after Ava DuVernay who is directing "A Wrinkle in Time".

The Hollywood Reporter was the first to report Caro's appointment. The New Zealand-born filmmaker broke through with 2002's "Whale Rider" which received critical acclaims as well as awards at international film festivals. Her recent films include "McFarland, USA" (2015) and "The Zookeeper's Wife", which is due out on March 31 in the U.S.

"Mulan" live-action reboot has Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver on board as screenwriters. The story will still follow a young woman who disguises herself as a man so she can take her father's place in the army and go to war. With the help of her trusty dragon sidekick Mushu, she becomes a skilled warrior and, eventually, one of the country's greatest heroines. Other details of the upcoming project are still not available.

The 1998 animation, which was directed by Barry Cook and Tony Bancroft, grossed $304 million worldwide.
