'Rogue One' Continues Its Reign at Box Office, 'Underworld: Blood Wars' Opens Soft

The 'Star Wars' stand-alone movie is still dominating North American box office in its fourth weekend, while the fifth 'Underworld' movie lands in the fourth place with $13.7 million.

AceShowbiz - *"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" continues its reign at North American box office for four weeks in a row. The "Star Wars" stand-alone movie starring Felicity Jones as its lead character named Jyn Erso is still triumphant with $22.1 million.

"It's a great weekend for space movies," says senior media analyst for comScore Paul Dergarabedian, pointing out that "Passengers (2016)", another space movie which stars Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, also remains among the top 10.

"Rogue One" narrowly beats *"Hidden Figures". Fox's drama about the untold story of three African-American women working at NASA takes the runner-up spot in its second weekend with $22.8 million. The movie is expanded by over 2,000 theaters after opening in limited theaters.

Meanwhile, one of this year's major movies, "Underworld: Blood Wars", opens soft at the domestic box office. The fifth installment of the "Underworld" movie series lands in the fourth place in its first weekend with $13.7 million against its production budget of $35 million.

Rounding out the top five are "Sing" and "La La Land". The animated musical featuring the voices of Matthew McConaughey and Tori Kelly among others drops one slot to the third place with $20.7 million, while the Damien Chazelle-directed musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone moves up from the seventh to the fifth place with $10.1 million.

UPDATE (January 9, 2017): *When the final figures came out on Monday, January 9, it was revealed that "Hidden Figures" grossed higher than "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story". Thus, the two movies swapped places with the drama securing the top spot and the sci-fi flick dropping to the runner-up place.
