Amazon has ordered a third season of the dystopian alternative history series and tapped Eric Overmyer as new showrunner.

AceShowbiz - "The Man in the High Castle" gets season 3 renewal, Amazon has announced through its YouTube channel. In addition to that, Eric Overmyer has been tapped to serve as showrunner and executive producer for the third season of the dystopian series.

Overmyer is replacing Frank Spotnitz, who left the series in the middle of second season production after reportedly clashing with the streaming service. The remaining producing team took over the show for the rest of production.

"As timely as ever, the exploration of characters at a dark point for humanity has provided incredible stories for two seasons," said Joe Lewis, Head of Comedy and Drama for Amazon Studios. "Eric and his team are doing an incredible job crafting stories about the inner lives of those who struggle to do good in a world that is not. We couldn't be more excited to bring Season 3 to customers in 2017," he added.

Based on Philip K. Dick's Hugo Award-winning 1962 alternate history novel of the same name, the second season, which was released on December 16, continues to explore what would have happened if the Allied Powers had lost World War II. While Germany controls much of the East Coast and Japan controls the West Coast, the Rocky Mountains have become a "neutral zone" and ground zero for a resistance, led by a mysterious figure known only as "The Man in the High Castle".

The series stars Alexa Davalos, Rupert Evans, Luke Kleintank, DJ Qualls, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Rufus Sewell, Joel De La Fuente, Brennan Brown, Callum Keith Rennie and Bella Heathcote.

Overmyer's TV series credits include "St. Elsewhere", "Homicide: Life on the Street", "Law & Order", "The Wire", "New Amsterdam", "Bosch" and "Treme".
