"Starship Troopers" is getting a reboot treatment from Sony's Columbia Pictures. The Hollywood Reporter brings the words that the studio has hired Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, the writing duo behind the upcoming "Baywatch" movie starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Zac Efron, to pen the script.

The movie won't be a remake of the original 1997 sci-fi movie directed by Paul Verhoeven, but it will be based on the same source material, Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 sci-fi novel that chronicles a war between mankind and alien bugs. Additionally, the project is said to be a new theatrical feature film that would relaunch a potential franchise.

Serving as producers of the upcoming remake are Neal H. Moritz, the producer behind the "Fast and Furious" movie franchise, and Toby Jaffe, who worked with Moritz on the studio's remake of another 1990s sci-fi pic, "Total Recall". Matthew Milam is overseeing for the studio. As the project is still in early stage of development, no release date and casting have been announced.

The original "Starship Troopers" starred Casper van Dien, Denise Richards and Neil Patrick Harris. It was a mixed success and eventually spawned three direct-to-DVD movies, "Hero of the Federation", "Marauder" and "Invasion".
