AceShowbiz - Johnny Depp has reportedly signed on to star in Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. biopic "Labyrinth". According to Screen Daily, the Jack Sparrow of the "Pirates of the Carribbean" film series will portray L.A.P.D. detective Russel Poole in the film adaptation of 2002's non-fiction novel written by Randall Sullivan.
Poole was a rising star in the force until he accused a fellow officer of being involved in the death of rapper Biggie Smalls (Notorious B.I.G.). Quitting the force, he became a private detective and also looked into the killing of Biggie's rival Tupac. The detective never discovered the killers of the two rappers, but he apparently did find a lot of corruption inside the Los Angeles Police Department.
The upcoming biopic will be directed by "The Lincoln Lawyer" and "The Infiltrator" helmer Brad Furman. Christian Contreras is attached to pen the screenplay based on the biography titled "LAbyrinth: a Detective Investigates the Murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G., the Implication of Death Row Records' Suge Knight, and the Origins of the Los Angeles Police Scandal".
The release date is yet to be set and no additional casting is announced. However, the production is expected to begin early next year. Miriam Segal serves as producer. Good Films is in a partnership with Camela Galano to oversee the distribution and finance the project.
"Labyrinth" is not only the latest project to take a look at Tupac and Biggie's lives. A new Tupac biopic titled "All Eyez on Me" wrapped production earlier this year, and a comedy series based on Notorious B.I.G.'s life is currently in development on TBS.
