AceShowbiz - Long before her acclaimed role in Top Gun: Maverick, a young Jennifer Connelly captivated audiences as Sarah, a determined teenager navigating a fantastical world of goblins and magic. Now, nearly four decades after its original release, Jim Henson's beloved fantasy film, Labyrinth, is set to return to theaters in a fully remastered 4K presentation, celebrating its 40th anniversary.
Fans will have the opportunity to revisit this cinematic gem on the big screen from January 8–11, 2026. This special event, presented by Fathom Entertainment in partnership with Sony Pictures and The Jim Henson Company, promises not only the stunning 4K restoration of Labyrinth but also a brand-new special featurette. This exclusive content was filmed at the UK’s “Labyrinth Experience & Masked Ball,†hosted by Thames Con in association with Henson’s company, celebrating the film's enduring and passionate fandom.
Released in 1986, Labyrinth stars a then 14-year-old Connelly in her breakout role as Sarah, who must brave a treacherous magical maze to rescue her baby brother from the enigmatic Goblin King. This iconic antagonist was brought to life by none other than David Bowie, delivering one of his most memorable screen performances, complete with several original songs he performed, including the catchy “Magic Dance.â€
The film was directed by the visionary Jim Henson and executive produced by George Lucas. Its story, conceived by Henson and Dennis Lee, was adapted into a screenplay by Terry Jones of Monty Python’s Flying Circus fame. The mesmerizing score was composed by Trevor Jones, complementing the film's extraordinary visuals.
Behind the camera, Labyrinth remains a testament to practical filmmaking artistry. It features breathtaking practical effects, imaginative creature designs by the legendary artist Brian Froud, and the unparalleled work of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. This team meticulously crafted a vibrant world populated by goblins, beasts, and unforgettable companions who alternately aid and hinder Sarah’s perilous quest. Notable creature performers included Henson mainstays such as Frank Oz, Dave Goelz, Karen Prell, Kevin Clash, Steve Whitmire, and Brian Henson.
While Labyrinth initially struggled at the box office in 1986, earning only $14 million against a $25 million budget, it steadily gained traction over the years, blossoming into a beloved cult classic. Today, it boasts a Certified Fresh 77% critic score and an 86% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. For many, Labyrinth represents the zenith of practical fantasy filmmaking, celebrated for its tactile, surreal, and deeply emotional resonance—qualities rarely matched by modern CGI. It also holds a significant place in history as Jim Henson’s final major directorial film, following masterpieces like The Great Muppet Caper (1981) and The Dark Crystal (1982), cementing its legacy as a true fantasy masterpiece.
